Scott Morrison has an opportunity to be known not only as the incumbent Prime Minister during our greatest bushfire crisis, but as the leader who guided us towards better co-existence with fire in the future.| OPINION ausfires

Scott Morrison has announced he will be proposing a national inquiry, possibly a royal commission, into the current bushfire crisis. This can be welcomed with cautious optimism. A national catastrophe requires a national response, as amply illustrated by the nature of the fires themselves, which have transcended state borders and the capacity of our state-based fire-management systems to respond to them.

None has grappled fully with the prospect of adaptation to a world transformed by heat, drought and fire under climate change. There must be an analysis of losses and transformations to ecosystems, species and environmental services produced by these fires, including the ability of agencies to measure, evaluate and respond to these impacts. The overall successes and failures in our planning, preparedness and response must be honestly evaluated, including the resourcing, funding and structure of fire and land-management institutions.

Such a task force needs the time, funding and independence to support the work of the inquiry and to objectively evaluate the wealth of information and ideas that stem not only from this crisis but similar experiences before and elsewhere.

Matter of time before ScoMo haters attack him for not getting this volcano capped in the Philippines......!

And now, Journos criticising ScoMo for not having a working relationship with China, to get them to reduce their emissions......ScoMo must be wishing he never heard of Hawaii. !!

This is disgraceful political journalism, that is 100% incorrect. The Black Saturday fires in Victoria, saw 173 killed and 3,500 buildings destroyed, Australia’s worst disaster on record ! Closest to it saw 60 lives lost in 1926.

Rushing to his defence once again. I used to love the age for its honest unbiased reporting. Not now right wing fake news poorly reported.

.....?

We all know he won’t

He doesn’t understand true leadership

Oh one word Bullshit!! He's definately dead at the next election and if the Liberal Party had any sense they would dump him now but who to replace him that is the problem because any one of his henchmen is no better? do we wait or do we riot.

Good press and propaganda won't help. He failed, the major and minor parties have failed. Time to start over. Politicians need to understand there are consequences to their actions.

Lol. What did I just read

More apologist crap. Sorry, not buying it. The mans a yahoo.

Will be LUCKY to see out a one term PM.

It’s been a baptism of fire for the PM. He lost the mandate of leadership, respect from the public and the authority to lead. This is a climate catastrophe. Made worse by his lack of understanding of what is important; environment. We we will save the planet 🌏. UN UNEP

Failures this bad you don't recover from. 'The PM who shat himself, twice' will be his political epitaph.

The opportunity will be missed.

LOL, your asking ScoMo, Mr Coal to lead Australia into the new hot world.

But he doesn't want to be that leader, otherwise he would already have seized the opportunity.

What a Load of 🐎 💩, Morriscum has No Capacity to LEAD, Ross Bradstock is trying to pump up His tyres after his Shocking Fall in Polls . Albanese has been leading and dragging Morriscum kicking and Screaming to Act ScottyFomMarketing gets an F auspol

Did you drink a box of wine for brekky?

Who put the hashish in the cookies at the Age... 🧐

Have you forgotten the rudd2009 fires?

It looks like they're going to milk this for all the can.

I do like his rhetoric about adapting to the new normal. I’m busily future proofing my farm thinking what it might be like and what will be needed when my kids take it over. I’d rather work to the future than play a blame game and do nothing

😆

ScottyFromMarketting ScottyFomMarketing has failed Australia. Epically

GailCoastie Don't get your hopes up ! (He walked away from this lady's question)

Our greatest bushfire crisis? Lol.......who posts this bullshit.

There a truck crash on the M7 today and scomoo doing nothing to help

The day Australia was attacked by deadly arsonists ArsonEmergency deregisterthegreens

Scott Morrison & the LNP have proved their inability to lead and their contempt for our people, our country and our environment has manifested in their bumbling responses to water management, climate action and inaction on clean energy. scomomustgo duttonnoway

Nuclear power please. Let’s stop messing about like children.

Everything Morrison does is a performance, all managed by his mining exec staff and newscorp. Why does not our media ask why he refuses to front up to the public to communicate like a leader but rather continues to play his usual games of spin. He is a zero. Say it.

That’s probably a state issue.

Co-existence? This wouldn’t need to be the case if we took a proactive approach to fire management and the effect climate change has on the fire season. Unfortunately the liberal government had the chance and the warnings to act upon. The choose to do nothing.

Hope that before any 'policy change', ScottMorrisonMP calls the Royal Commission and makes the Terms of Reference wide enough to consider the real causes of Global warming (Hint: It ain't CO2) so Scientists can include some real science (not politics).
