The Department of Justice (DOJ) has sought to expedite the release of licenses and permits to carry firearms for prosecutors by allowing them to secure these from regional offices of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento explained this would allow prosecutors to always arm themselves for their own protection.Malcontento lamented at the moment government prosecutors still have to go secure permits and licenses for firearms at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City.“I am requesting this especially for the prosecutors,” stressed Malcontento who pointed out prosecutors continue to be attacked and killed.

The Prosecutor General said that he has already talked about this with acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa and hope to implement this by next year. On the other hand, Malcontento admitted that the lack of a permanent PNP chief has turned out to be hurdle to overcome before this deal could happen. “We have to realize that we have to wait until a permanent chief PNP is designated so that we can fully coordinate with him and address the matter,” he explained.
