SHANGHAI - China's foreign ministry summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad on Monday to protest against the passing of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act in the US Congress, saying it amounted to interference in a Chinese internal matter.

Anti-government demonstrators have protested in the streets of Hong Kong for more than five months amid increasing violence and fears that China will ratchet up its response to stop the civil disobedience. The US House of Representatives sent the bills to the White House on Wednesday after voting 417 to 1 for the"Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act", which the Senate had passed unanimously the day before.
