WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court said it would consider a challenge to a key enforcement tool of the Securities and Exchange Commission: the ability to claw back ill-gotten gains from those who commit financial fraud.

The SEC annually obtains orders that require wrongdoers to disgorge billions of dollars in revenue generated by fraudulent activity, including $2.5 billion in the past fiscal year.
