WASHINGTON: A top Democratic senator on Thursday questioned whether President Donald Trump interfered with a criminal investigation of Turkey's Halkbank, which has been accused of conspiring to evade US sanctions against Iran.

The charges against Halkbank are the latest development in a US criminal case that became public in 2016 with the arrest in Miami of Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader accused of playing a central role in the sanctions evasion scheme. Before pleading guilty, Zarrab hired Rudy Giuliani, a longtime associate of Trump, to try to negotiate a deal between the US and Turkish governments to secure his release.

Turkish officials raised Halkbank in their discussions with American counterparts last week, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence told a press conference in Ankara following the talks, which were focused on Syria.
