Celdran has been convicted by the Metropolitan Trial Court of Manila of violating the said law provided under the Revised Penal Code when he disrupted an ecumenical service attended by leaders of various Christian groups and Catholic Church at the Manila Cathedral back in September 2010.
Lagman said Celdran was a “fellow RH advocate” who was charged with the “archaic” Article 133 of the RPC. Article 133 provides: “The penalty of arresto mayor in its maximum period to prision correctional in its minimum period shall be imposed upon anyone who, in a place devoted to religious worship or during the celebration of any religious ceremony shall perform acts notoriously offensive to the feelings of the faithful.”
Lagman: the Catholic hierarchy must not interfere in secular affairs This might infringe on the freedom of expression: everyone is free to voice their opinions, whoever they may be and whatever opinion they may have, w/o being stopped by the govt, by law etc
'Lagman said Art 133 is “utterly subjective and leaves to the undue discretion of the court' Yup; since feelings are subjective and do no physical harm, being a crime doesn't seem proper for a govt w a freedom of religion constitution
