PETALING JAYA: The government has been urged to review the University and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) following a protest incident involving Universiti Malaya (UM), which saw a student activist being investigated by authorities and another being barred from attending his graduation convocation.

The Universiti Malaya Law Society said the Pakatan Harapan government, which believes in student autonomy and activism, should review the UUCA as it impedes on students’ ability to participate in politics.

“We extremely regret the circumstances that have plagued the national scene and we plead for all parties to take high regard of the spirit of racial equality and student autonomy,” it said in a statement on Friday . On Monday , UM lodged a police report against civil engineering graduate Wong Yan Ke, 23, who staged a solo protest, calling for the resignation of the varsity’s vice-chancellor Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim.

On the following day, 23-year-old accountancy graduate Edan Kon Hua En claimed he was barred from attending his graduation convocation because UM feared that he might pull off a similar protest.
