Extinction Rebellion activists begin legal fight over protest ban

Any assembly of more than two people linked to the Extinction Rebellion action is now illegal in London.

"I think it's important to protect the right of free speech, and the right to demonstrate in our society - obviously in a non-violent way," he said. A government spokesman said the UK was already taking"world-leading action to combat climate change as the first major economy to legislate to end our contribution to global warming entirely by 2050".

BBCPolitics They have lost their public support with these disruptive protests. This is not the way to win your argument! Re-think your tactics or you will start to be labelled 'loonies'.

BBCLondonNews Sounds about right, let's get the layers in to draft up loads and loads of legal documents made out of paper to fight our views on damage to our planet

I think it is time to investigate those that re whipping up this frenzy.

I hope all the mums and their babies that are protesting today, are all using reusable nappies.

They could always go to China.

Good, and so they should. Such a ban is totally undemocratic and ignores the state of emergency over which XL is protesting. Public disruption is highly unfortunate but extreme measures have to be taken. Millions of people couldn't care less.

Strange how the police didn't think the thousands of pro Brexit and remainer protesters in recent months, was curtailing people's right to movement by blocking off public highways but the Extinction Rebellion activists does curtail free movement. Cherry picking at its worst.

The public dont support their illegal actions.

Bored to death with it almost as much as Brexit

Pathetic.

Britain should learn some peaceful protest from HongKongProtesters that the British government openly supported.

BBCLondonNews Just being 'peaceful' does not exempt actions from criminal (damage) and civil (obstruction) laws. How is an XR leader pounding on a (toughened) DfT window non-criminal, peaceful protests?

Are they using public funds for this? If so we should demand the money back!

There’s more than a little irony that a essentially a anarchist organisation who’s whole existence seems to be to publicise there aims by breaking the law rush to the courts when the establishment fight back !

I think they'll be tying their own hands if they win - they might have to commit to obeying the law as regards restrictions, which they have so far failed to do - the courts surely wouldn't countenance ruling in their favour if that won't be guaranteed

BBCPolitics Is SadiqKhan funding their legal action?

BBCPolitics I suspect this will all be paid for by Crowdfunding......Seems to be the latest fad 🤨

Haven't they got any jobs to go to?

BBCPolitics Weirdos

Maybe Extinction Rebellion or any mob handed demonstration should have to abide by the laws other large events have to abide by. Maybe Extinction Rebellion should paying for service of police, fire and ambulance cover required for these large protests.

Right Patel our futures In Your hands ,get these laws sorted so we can put an end to these wonderful wonderful people .

It would be intereting what the court says in rely to their request for an urgent hearing. Not quite sure what the urgency is personally.

They are as thick as Shig Pit.

I wonder who's paying their legal costs .... the drama students and weirdos didn't look like they could afford a tin of soup !

BBCPolitics Who funds them

Nutjobs! ClimateChange is natural and CarbonDioxide is essential to life!

Another excuse to find something to do....

Hopefully they will he hit with a very very large bill for costs.

And give license to the scum to continue to break the law

Anyone who supports police corruption are to blame for the rise in crime

Eco terrorists should be banned. Bolton has said they want to topple governmenrts and there might be deaths. Sounds like they plan to progress to violence. Let us hope there are sensible judges deciding not the old biddy with the creepy crawly jewellery.

What including being outside your HQ?

No issue with lawful protest...but a lot of it isn’t lawful.

Fighting climate change is vital

Well, this will bankrupt them. Silly.

They are just Communist plants.

Whether folk agree or disagree with ExtinctionRebelion banning protest is a slippery slope....

Well the governments set the standard by suing to get their own way. Even though the people clearly want Brexit.

They dont have any power over you

InthewordsofGretaThunberg how dare you !!

Before or after they sign on.

And now they want to not only disturb the public and distract the police, but also annoy the courts

Oh now they want to use the Law When it suits them Otherwise they don’t obey the law More double standards from ExtintionRebellion
