It's worth noting that under Spanish law, with good behavior, etc., they will almost certainly serve little more than 1/3 of their sentences. So even Oriol Junqueras, who has the longest sentence, is unlikely to serve even 5 years.

Appalling. Every geographically distinct people has the right to seek independence if they want it. Nothing of which they have been convicted should be a crime - gaoling them is the act of an oppressive empire, not a free democracy!

That's what happens when you break the law. Democracy is more than voting – in this case, in a simulacrum of a referendum with no procedural guarantees. Democracy depends on the rule of law. There can be no democracy without the rule of law.
