California will become the first state in the nation to mandate later start times at most public schools under legislation signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday, a proposal designed to improve educational outcomes by giving students more sleep.
While school schedules vary, a legislative analysis in July found that roughly half the schools in the state will be required to delay their start times by 30 minutes or less to comply with the law. An analysis of the 2011-2012 school year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the average start time for California schools attended by some 3 million middle school and high school students was 8:07 a.m. Some of the state’s students were required to be in class before 7:30 a.m.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also called for more research to document the effects of later start times and advised that average commutes in a community and other local factors should also be considered — a key argument made by the California School Boards Assn., the California Teachers Assn. and other opponents of the bill.
Only urban areas ?
It sucks as a parent. There are already no buses. Kids will just stay up later not local districts should vote for this, NOT state law.
guess going to bed 🛌 earlier didn't work
Goodness, Sacramento overreach over local school districts yet again. Does this law add 30-60 minutes to the clock each day? Does it ensure that students go to bed on time? Does it keep screens out of the bedrooms after bedtime? Politicians dictating such things is ridiculous.
It won't improve anything LOL
Might as well... they aren’t educating them anyways‼️
Appropriate!👍🏻
Any bets on test scores and sleep time a year later? Answer: no change.
Wonderful! Better rested students to disrupt class and not be suspended! Thank you PTA. Thank you CTA for sitting on your hand holding union dues! And local worthless so-called 'Teachers'' unions.
I knew that already happened in 1992 about late start times of middle and high school.
Or maybe they can turn off their devices and go to bed. Nothing will change. They'll stay up later and wake up later. Might be a good time to research how that Blue light on your screen affects sleep.
But your athletic kids still need to be there early and stay late. Because sports is American education.
Ah shit, why wasn’t this passed like 2 years ago when I was in high school
Put your kids to sleep earlier, it's called parenting.
They’re a little late. We been doing this since 1976 🤣🤣🤣🤣
=lazy
Can I sue California for backsleep?
Long over due
Pro Tip: Make your kids go to bed earlier. Parenting101
Hahaha and make it harder on the parents? Make them go to bed earlier...
Given the lack of infrastructure initiatives, this is the new..urban renewal - New California law requires middle and high schools in urban areas to delay start times to allow students to get more sleep.
Welcome to Venezuela
Why not go to bed a bit early?
Good
Do kids on the west coast Ever see Plymouth Rock?
Completely asinine !!
It's about time.
Probably one of THE STUPIDEST things GavinNewsom has done! So you’re saying kids are better off waking up later, but when they get a real job, they will become learning disabled?!? EDUCATION LOGIC RushHourTraffic BONEHEAD ParentsSchedules POLITICS
? Just go to sleep earlier the night before lol
Because thus dyslexia newsom always show up at work late.
a mistake in judgement. we werent being asked to go at 5 am, but maybe we should have been. might have given us some discipline.
About time. I imagine attendance will increase and tardiness will decrease. Grades and morale will inevitably improve.
We’re moving to California!
waaaaay overdue.
It will only be a 20-30 minute difference so that’s not bad
Is it push back, deferral, or postpone?
Someone needs to have Newsom checked!!
Curious how single working parent or 2 working parent households are going to get the kids to school and be at work at 8am. Not all jobs are flexible, and not all people know people in the same city that they would trust enough to take the kids to school.
'Republicans promote hard work and being responsible for oneself, and CA will not allow that Trumpian Nazism to threaten a democratic stronghold. It is important that we get folks on the government tit as early as possible to protect the future of the Democratic party' - Newsom
And when they get into the real world their jobs will not do this
Good! Who can think so early in the morning. And maybe it will alleviate rush hour as an added bonus!
Great news. There is no need for kids to wake up early to learn the same stuff they will learn otherwise. Let’s promote healthy learning.
So you're going to put school bus on the road... In the middle of rush hour.
Duhh. California is three hours behind. 😂
westlakepotter Whoa
I hope they still offer zero periods for high schoolers. At my daughter's high school they used zero periods for PE so they could actually spend the day taking classes they needed for college admissions.
More time for the kids to get high before school.
CollegeForAll or Bust. CancelStudentDebt
Setting these kids up for failure. What happens when they graduate and have to early for a job, or start college classes early!?
Is there anything California won’t legislate? Can I still set my alarm for 6am?
All the helicopter parents will just clog up traffic at a later time.
johnmyers Nothing like making life more difficult for working families. There’s a reason this was turned down again & again. Kids in sports & activities or jobs won’t be getting home until well after dinner. They’ll be up late w/homework & sleep benefits will be erased.
Excellent. Hopefully, employers will adjust accordingly.
Your local Independent school district is not yours, just the taxes you pay
Don't like it..... Not one bit....
So when those kids have to start jobs they’ll never be able to cope with early hours.
Greasy Gavin strikes again!
This ends up cutting into family time. In order to drop off my kid and make it to work, I have to work until 6-6:30. So by the time I get home and make dinner we will have 1 hour together. Her band practice is already until 9 two days a week when she starts at 7:45.

The new law will take effect over a phased-in period, ultimately requiring middle schools to begin classes at 8 a.m. or later while high schools will start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
