California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Friday that would eliminate private, for-profit prisons, including those used for immigration detention, by 2028.
Operating a private immigration detention facility and incarcerating people in for-profit prisons will be prohibited after Jan. 2028,"During my inaugural address, I vowed to end private prisons, because they contribute to over-incarceration, including those that incarcerate California inmates and those that detain immigrants and asylum seekers," Newsom said in a statement."These for-profit prisons do not reflect our values.
that found"egregious violations of detention standards" at the Adelanto Detention Facility, including"nooses in detainee cells, improper and overly restrictive segregation, and inadequate detainee medical care." "The key word here is 'for-profit,'" he told NBC News."That means they will make sure they maximize profits and they are willing to cut back on things like medical services and even food."
READ before you go all maga folks., Read ' For profit prisons ' Breath , and read, repeat..
Good job, Cali. I’m proud of you on this one.
By 2022 would be more appropriate
Gavin Newsom is turning Calif into a nightmare. First he disregards death penalty sentences. Once upon a time Democrats were ok w/private prisons (which were always a bad idea), but now that the feds are enforcing immigration laws, these facilities are no longer ok. Hypocrite
Thank God!! I wish more Governor's would have the integrity, and the heart, to do this!!
Where will the residents be housed?
Too long.
Good and the illegals can get shipped home to their country of origin
California's leadership in banning for profit prisons is great. I just would asked that it be done by 2024.
Way to go!
So non-profit prisons are ok. Can anyone name some non-profit businesses that have well paid CEOs and lots of cash in the bank?
Good. It’s a start.
