Judge Tammy Kemp explains why she hugged ex-police officer Amber Guyger at the end of her trial for the 2018 killing of her neighbor Botham Jean.

Jean’s death drew widespread attention because of the strange circumstances and because it was one in a string of shootings of unarmed black men by white police officers.

Guyger, 31, had just worked a long shift and was still in her uniform when she entered Jean’s apartment and shot the 26-year-old accountant, who grew up in the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia. She testified that she had mistaken his fourth-floor apartment for her own, which was directly underneath his, and that she thought he was an intruder. After Guyger was sentenced and the jury left the courtroom, Jean’s brother, Brandt Jean, was allowed to address Guyger directly from the witness stand.

Kemp said that Guyger asked twice if she could hug her as well and, after a moment’s hesitation, the judge wrapped her arms around the former police officer. “Following my own convictions, I could not refuse that woman a hug. I would not,” said Kemp, who is black. “And I don’t understand the anger. And I guess I could say if you profess religious beliefs and you are going to follow them, I would hope that they not be situational and limited to one race only.”

Yes she could. It’s called No and something she probably does t afford the convicts of color. TaintedTammy

Again if she hugged all convicted murders then it's a non issue. But there is no proof she does so it is an issue.

This Judge is awesome. MORE should follow her lead. About time she does things HER WAY !!

Personally, I think hugs are something you should NEVER have to explain. Ever.

Wow. The hubris of the convicted murderer is the epitome of white privilege.

Yes she could. She just didn’t. And the Bible shit was bananas

That former police officer was a self admitted racist. She got preferential treatment because she was a cop....

This is a none issue STOP IT!

Wonder if she hugs all convicted murderers?

Its to Easy for people to Kill

Witness in ex-Dallas officer's murder trial reportedly shot and killedAuthorities say Joshua Brown, a witness in the murder trial of white Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who fatally shot her black neighbor Botham Jean, has been killed in a shooting. So messed He wa shot in the same apartment building and in the mouth! If that’s not a message, I don’t know what is! This so tragic. At worst it's retaliatory because a white woman was held accountable for her actions. At best, it's another senseless gun death enabled by lax regulations. Either way, no one is winning.
