'No law may curtail the inherent power of the courts to engage in judicial review.'

The independence of the judiciary is paramount to ensure that courts have the power to examine legal actions from all parties, says Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

“Good governance standards dictate that the exercise of this power must be controlled in such a way that it does not interfere with individual rights with impunity. “If the government should fail to protect the people’s rights, the citizen would have the right to throw out the government,” she said. It was argued that the decision of conversion by the relevant federal bodies was not amenable to judicial review.
