O'Callaghan said that fostering could alleviate pressure on Ireland's asylum system.

FIANNA FÁIL’S JUSTICE spokesperson has called for the Department of Justice & Equality to develop a fostering programme for asylum seekers to relieve pressure on Ireland’s Direct Provison system.

Public procurement difficulties experienced by RIA alongside issues for Direct Provision residents finding suitable accommodation in the rental sector once granted leave-to-remain, has forced RIA to contract hotels and B&Bs. O’Callaghan has said that fostering could alleviate pressure on Ireland’s asylum system and should be examined in the context of Ireland’s foster system whereby foster families are paid €325 for children under 12 and €352 per week over 12.

Any system would need to be “closely scrutinised so you don’t have people taking advantage”, O’Callaghan said, and subject to garda vetting. In late 2018, Community Sponsorship Ireland was set up under the programme. The scheme is a complementary resettlement stream as opposed to the traditional state-centred model for refugees.

The pilot phase of the programme is currently being reviewed, the spokesperson added, and a decision on whether to establish Community Sponsorship as a national programme is expected over the coming weeks. “The community groups go through a rigorous application process, oftentimes taking months to complete training, raise funds and source suitable accommodation,” Finn said.

“There’s a bit of a lack of awareness out there about Direct Provision. We’ve a responsibility, an international obligation…to provide international protection to genuine asylum seekers.”

Terminable at will, without the appeals system under the existing regulations. In other words, reducing rights still further.

Not letting them in. Not letting them endlessly appeal rejected claims and actually deporting the illegals instead of asking them to deport themselves by a given date would aswel would alleviate the pressure overnight.

Ah go on...foster a bearded child... what could possibly go wrong?

Judging by the experience of my community, they must be having a laugh! Tulsa can't even keep track of safeguarding the children in their care!

What a brain fart of an idea, this idea could cause more problems than solving them.

All that outside of the implications of putting a child into foster care, what about cultural understanding and its implications for both parties?

As of today, there are NOT enough foster parents in the country, What does Mr O'Callaghan propose to do to find all of the additional foster parents needed for his scheme? esp as all parents/houses need staff checks, training and clearance. Which take time and money.

FF in the last week since polls have them in front seem to be trying to bring their poll rating down .
