New emergency powers designed to put a lid on escalating protest action in Hong Kong have come into force.

Protestors are now banned from wearing masks during protests under a colonial-era law last used 52 years ago. The emergency law, which has not been used in 52 years, means the government can pass laws without first being approved by the city's parliament, the Legislative Council .

Meanwhile, A 14-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being shot in the leg during protests. It is unclear whether the teenager was shot with a live round or a rubber bullet, and whether it was fired by the police or someone else. The boy, who was shot in the left thigh, has been transferred from Pok Oi Hospital to Tuen Mun Hospital. Image: AP
