Nearly three guards are being assaulted each day in Victoria's "full" youth prisons, prompting calls from the Community and Public Sector Union – one of the state's most powerful unions – for an "interim" facility until the new Cherry Creek site is built in 2021.
He said there had been 311 assaults on staff at youth justice centres in the first 120 days of the year, while a single day last month recorded 29 detainee on detainee assaults. A spokesman for the Andrews Government said an interim centre was unlikely and asked the union for more detail about its demands. He added new accommodation units were about to be completed at both Parkville and Malmsbury centres.
"We can't wait 14 months because the two facilities are full and we have no flexibility to deal with these sorts of assaults," he said.
