'No charges are warranted,' the sheriff says, calling the shooting a 'horrible accident.'

A man shot and killed his son-in-law who jumped out of the bushes to surprise him for his birthday, in what the local sheriff called a"horrible accident."The incident began when 37-year-old Christoper Bergan, who lives in Norway, arrived at a Florida airport around 11 p.m. Tuesday and then headed directly to his father-in-law's house in the Pensacola area, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said at a news conference on Thursday.

Dennis was startled, Johnson said, and the two got into a verbal altercation before the relative left."Anybody who is religious out there, you need to pray for this family," the sheriff said."I can't imagine what they're going through... it's horrible." Bergan, who is married to Dennis' daughter, had lived in Florida before moving to Norway, the sheriff said.

Good thing he had a gun to protect himself!

Next Dateline, enormous amount of spouses getting killed by surprise parties.

So even after having had a similar event take place earlier in the day with a family member. He decided to arm himself and shoot first.

It is a sad country that we live in, if our first thought when someone bangs on the door to get a gun out.

Just wow!

Where was the warning shot?!? ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

“The sheriff noted that, earlier that night, another one of Dennis' relatives came to his home at 9:30 p.m. and started banging on his front door in the same manner.” They had a verbal altercation, and the person left. A weird story about what happened to the SIL, but OK. 🤷🏽‍♀️

TIF - “This is Florida!”

I mean does he just walk around with his gun? Sheesh. I’m not sure how I’d handle this if I was his daughter.

FLORIDA MAN STRIKES AGAIN!

😢😢😢

The punishment should be he loses all of his guns. Take all the guns.

What kind of birthday surprise is that, jumping out from the bushes in the middle of the night?

Mercy

What if that person was a meter person looking for a gas leak, or a non family member doing stuff as part of their work? What if it were a child? This person has demonstrated questionable, if not criminal use of a weapon, with fatal consequences.

This death had been brought to you by the 2nd Amendment.

Man moves daughter to Norway. Relatives come by to surprise with birthday wishes and is met with discourse. Son-in-law comes with surprise greeting and is shot fatally, instantly. Body recognition has to kick in pretty fast to make a kill shot. Hmmm.

Good guy with a gun killing a bad guy... no, a... good guy doing a good thing... I’m so confused about all this justifiable righteous gun business. notsotriggerhappy

Cautionary tale: Birthday surprises are deadly in Florida.

So sad imagine if he did not own a gun what would have happend? Don't rell me that

How not to surprise someone. But I wonder, did the man yell I’ve got a gun? Did he have time to let the person know he was armed? I know it’s an accident but still I’d like to know further facts. I mean, who the hell does that to someone as a surprise?

Another responsible Gun Owner. Thoughts and Prayers.

Gotta love a startled good guy with a gun

Oh yeah...that’s how my son in law died too. It’s maybe the most common ways sons in laws die. No need to investigate

Thanksgiving dinner is going to be awkward...

When it comes to guns, there are no accidents. The person who did that should never be allowed to use a gun ever again. The reason is simple: I can't trust him to use a gun safely.

.NRA Guns are for killing things, especially people. They’re very good at it! Glory

what? You people are demented.

Needs to charged.

that's horrible. poor family.

% trigger-happy people.

but a woman shoots a man in the wrong apartment and it's murder. This is at least man slaughter

Do these guys hold on to their gun trigger 24/7

That's horseshit, my retired uncle in Florida sot 2 warning shot for burglars he got 3 years , discharged a firearm

I bet no more surprises are planned for that trained gunslinger. You'd think situational awareness would be part of such training for gun ownership.

Why you only tell us the races when it's black and white. What's the races for this case? White on white or black on black

How is this much different from AmberGuygerTrial an innocent man was killed but he shooter was startled and reacted in the moment FridayThoughts

Prayers are with the family.

Sad storyline

3rd rule of gun safety: Know your target and what is beyond it. If people just followed the 4 basic rules, these negligent shootings would stop. Get trained, get armed.

Morons with guns

The police won't charge him because then they'd have to start charging all the trigger happy cops too. Too many shoot first no charge later, completely avoidable 'accidents'.

So basically he just shot the wrong guy . because the first guy banging on his door he had an altercation with him . He must've thought he came back.

Seriously?!?

Well I guess this guy's birthday surprise is that he can fatally shoot someone and avoid all accountability for his actions.

if only there was a good guy with a gun...

murder......

Guns.

Gonna need a new Sheriff

HFS

Now its his daughter's bday

Scratching my head. “The sheriff noted that, earlier that night, another one of Dennis' relatives came to his home at 9:30 p.m. and started banging on his front door in the same manner.”

Which video games were involved?

People from Norway, huh?

Could you please not report on a very intentional shooting as “accidental?” This gunman made the decision to shoot someone and he did just that. It’s on him that he didn’t identify who he was shooting. This was far from “accidental.”

America is a very scary place right now...where GUNS have RIGHTS. . 'No charges are warranted,' the sheriff says, calling the shooting a 'horrible accident.'

We don’t have a gun problem in this country

Careless balls

Knew this was Florida or Texas without even checking

Well-regulated militia.

Should charges be filed?

I guess he is going by the 'Shit Happens' law.
