The former US Special Envoy to Ukraine has become the first official to testify in the democratic impeachment inquiry against the US President.

Kurt Volker resigned last week over a whistleblower's complaint about a phone call Donald Trump held with his Ukrainian counterpart. Mr Volker resigned after being named in a whistleblower complaint which sparked an impeachment inquiry into the president.

He told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week of his decision to leave the job, according to a US official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The move comes after it emerged Mr Volker had connected the US president's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani with Ukrainian officials to investigate Joe Biden and his family over allegedly corrupt business dealings.
