BRUSSELS - Facebook can be ordered to police and remove illegal content worldwide, Europe’s top court said on Thursday, in a landmark ruling that rights activists say raises concerns some countries could use it to silence critics.
“EU law does not preclude a host provider like Facebook from being ordered to remove identical and, in certain circumstances, equivalent comments previously declared to be illegal,” the Court said in a statement. In the Google case the court decided that the right to have personal data deleted was not absolute and freedom of information needed to be considered too.
Facebook slammed the decision, saying that it was not the role of social platforms to monitor, interpret and remove speech that may be illegal in any particular country. UK rights group Article 19 backed Facebook, saying it could lead to social platforms installing automated filters to screen out content.
“The CJEU is taking a position on this issue in that it is saying one must create and strengthen instruments for the enforcement of personal rights,” she told Austrian national broadcaster ORF.
And so it begins, the EU can now force social media companies worldwide to remove content that it deems illegal....
Facebook is a Cesspool of Crap.
The EU was originally a Nazi plan. It has a Nazi at the helm. So... Censorship is a natural thing. Wondering when the book burning will begin.
Been off of Facebook for 3 yrs now. Nope don't miss it
should have ordered the ahi...
Our mission at is to build the social media platform that ends fake news
These platform makes most of its revenue in the EU. So I say get an injunction and stop these bastards from trading unless they comply
Thanks God someone has some basic common sense approach to this disease of our generation that SM is. EU is absolutely spot on. All platforms must be regulated and all Ads and contents must come under the Regulations those apply for TV and media
The U.S. 1st Amendment does not apply throughout the world. Hate talks is not tolerated. Facebook better comply or it will turned off.
Maybe remove Zuck.
EU Court has just legalised censorship.
The question now is who will police the thought police?
Or we just block the EU.
