Joshua Boyle’s defence team calls him unconventional, unlikeable, but truthful

Former Afghanistan hostage Joshua Boyle may be unconventional, unlikable, even infuriating, his lawyer told court, but he is also an intelligent and courageous man who tells the truth — even when it harms his own interests.“Joshua Boyle is many things,” Greenspon told Judge Peter Doody. “He’s extremely intelligent and makes little effort to hide that, so he comes off as arrogant. He’s meticulous, and therefore argumentative. He can be frustrating to the point of being infuriating.

Boyle, 36, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include assault, sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, public mischief and criminal harassment. Greenspon said Coleman’s own testimony described a woman with a constellation of psychiatric issues that began in her early 20s and worsened over time.

Because of those fits and their impact on her memory, Greenspon argued, Coleman’s evidence cannot be relied upon. Boyle testified that he wasn’t in love with Coleman before their marriage, and did not consider marriage to be a lifelong commitment. Boyle’s defence team is expected to conclude its final argument Tuesday morning after which the Crown will make submissions.

Of course they say he's 'truthful' because to put someone on the stand who you know is going to lie is a crime. And it don't do much for their case to tell the world that he is a liar.
