Aboriginal followers of a Tongan-born preacher set fire to artefacts considered sacred by many local elders, and dismantle and burn a spiritual law ground.

One of the women who helped organise the bonfire said the devil had caused disruption and violence in the community.

"For many years we have been deceived by Satan and his demonic beings," an unidentified man narrates as the fire burns.Local women have told Background Briefing people started burning things associated with 'sinful' behaviour, before escalating to cultural items. "I take it back to the fire and throw it down in the fire. From that day on, I never smoke and I thank the Lord for that."

Later, worshippers turned their attention on a nearby bough shed, or shade structure, where cultural elders gathered when putting local boys through traditional 'law business', or coming-of-age rituals.

WTF is wrong with these people?

Ultimately it’s their community and they should be able to run it how they see fit without paternalistic interference from outsiders

In fact un-Christian. Loopy 'born again' types messing it up agsin.

beyerstein Daesh, meet the converts

How is this happening in this day and age? Nothing good has ever come from outsiders diminishing and demonising the religions and customs of indigenous populations. This has to stop.

Christianity does not assimilate with Australian culture.

Asher_Wolf And pretty soon these types will be citing the ReligiousFreedom Bill to justify their means and opinions. Auspol

And the religious freedom supporters? Where are they?

What sacred object ?. A tree. A rock. They built nothing ?

Christianity as a faith is totally alien to Aboriginal culture. The natives should go back to their original faith, gang up & chase all the religious colonisers/nutters out of their communities.

Destruction of physical symbolism, to regain a stolen existential oil, from an intrusive possessive antiscripturist enemy. Can be achieved with purpose made idols. Unless made for this purpose, nothing is achieved destroying inert objects. It takes huge amounts of planning. UN

just can't pass up an opp. to bash Christ. This is a cult you're 'reporting' on - is accuracy too much to expect from 'ourabc' ?

These fruitcakes should be arrested

Missionaries need to be outlawed.
