A lawyer who acted for NSW Labor has denied he exploited ambiguities in the Electoral Commission's questions to help Labor avoid revealing the true source of a $100,000 donation at the centre of a corruption inquiry

A Sydney lawyer who acted for the NSW Labor Party has denied he exploited ambiguities in questions asked by the Electoral Commission to help the party avoid revealing the true source of a $100,000 donation at the centre of a corruption inquiry.

The ICAC has heard allegations the party used straw donors to disguise the fact that Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo, a banned donor, delivered $100,000 in cash to the party's Sydney headquarters in an Aldi bag after a Chinese Friends of Labor fundraising dinner in March 2015. Mr Huang denies making the donation. There is no suggestion Mr Robertson helped orchestrate the alleged scheme.

Mr Robertson denied the party was "plainly" asking him for legal advice at the time and disagreed with the barrister for Ms Murnain, Ian Neil, SC, that it was "blindingly obvious" the Electoral Commission was asking for the identity of the donor.
