Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt has said establishing an Indigenous voice to parliament will not be part of a referendum on constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

While delivering the 2019 Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture on Thursday night, Mr Wyatt confirmed he was not seeking to have the ‘voice’ enshrined in the constitution.

“The question we put to the Australian people will not result in what some desire, and that is an enshrined voice to the parliament,” he said. “On these two matters, whilst related, they needed to be treated separately.” Mr Wyatt is not ruling out having an Indigenous voice to parliament altogether, seeking to establish it through legislation.
