Defying the youth detention Royal Commission, the NT Government announces it will build its new youth justice facility next to an adult prison.

A new youth detention centre to replace Darwin's Don Dale facility will be built next to the city's adult prison, despite the youth detention royal commission saying they should be kept separate.Chief Minister Michael Gunner last week green-lit the plan to build the facility next to the adult prison

The Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children instructed against building the new facility near an adult prison A"cottage-style" youth precinct to replace the condemned Don Dale facility will be built adjacent to the Darwin Correctional Precinct at Holtze, 30 kilometres from Darwin.The final report of the youth detention royal commission said replacement facilities,"should not be located on, or in close proximity to, adult prison precincts".

The report said the Northern Territory Government accepted that new facilities are needed"separate from adult correctional facilities and different from the detention centres of the past and present".
