Crown Resorts has lured "high rollers" from China so they could bet their money away in Melbourne, according to a Nine investigation. Thousands of documents leaked from the casino operator revealed Crown allegedly used an emergency channel with Australian consulate officials to fast-track visas.
The strategy led to 19 Crown employees, including three Australians, arrested in China where promoting gambling is illegal. Crown allegedly sidestepped the law by enlisting the help of junket operators who were associated with Chinese organised crime gangs, which would bait wealthy Chinese to Australia in exchange for a commission. One former Crown employee told Nine she personally helped grant 300 visas during her employment.
