The conviction of a former EFF deputy for assaulting former staffer Maggie Klaas is something of a bittersweet victory for her as she is now unemployed and is yet to receive a cent even after the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration ordered the party to compensate her for wrongful dismissal.

“I have been under severe stress and emotional abuse from party members and supporters who did not believe my version of events and described me as an enemy of the EFF. I am relieved this is over,” she said. In April, the EFF in the North West was ordered to pay her 11 months’ salary for unfair dismissal. This was after the CCMA found that her dismissal was procedurally and substantively unfair.

Klaas told City Press that she was in the process of starting her own non-governmental organisation to help women in politics who suffer abuse at the hands of their comrades. “Our position is very clear, we don’t support gender-based violence and now that there is a judgment we will look into internal processes of the party to discipline Ntsangane”.
