Man, 29, charged in relation to murder of Limerick boxer Kevin Sheehy

A 29-year-old man has been charged in connection to the murder of boxer Kevin Sheehy at Hyde Road in Limerick.An 18-year-old man who was also detained at Henry Street Garda Station has been released without charge.Tragic Mr Sheehy, 20, died in a hit and run incident took place at around 4.40am on Monday morning.Gardai arrested two males on Monday night in connection with the alleged hit-and-run.

One source said the pair had engaged in “a bit of banter” and “slagging” as a group gathered to celebrate Limerick’s Munster hurling final win over Tipperary on Sunday. “I loved him. It’s a sad day. As an athlete he was very special. He was five times Irish champion, he is a current under-22 champion, which he has held for the last two years.”

Chief Supt Gerry Roche asked the driver of a black Mitsubishi Shogun SUV which hit the sportsman to make contact. He also called for “calm” in the community.Sources claimed the Garda probe is following several lines of enquiry, including that Mr Sheehy may have been followed after leaving the house near Hyde Road.Asked if gardai believed the hit-and-run was deliberate, Chief Supt Roche said: “We are still looking at the circumstances and when we know more we will be able to tell you.
