The armed wing, moreover, was maniacal, utterly committed to finishing off what they unsuccessfully attempted on June 12, when the police thwarted their earlier attack on the legislature. Perhaps the most pathetic sight of all, however, was provided by the “pan-democrat” legislators, whose role became farcical.

Whether the armed wing was motivated, organised and financed by local groups or foreign agencies is unclear, although it is no secret that the protests generally have been encouraged by overseas politicians. Former governor Chris Patten, for example, even produced a video of himself in early June, which misrepresented the extradition bill and sought to stoke popular concerns.
