UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt urges authorities in Hong Kong not to use protests as a 'pretext for repression'

The BBC's Nick Beake goes inside the Legislative Council

Hong Kong, a former British colony, is part of China but run under a"one country, two systems" arrangement that guarantees it a level of autonomy. Its citizens enjoy rights not seen on the mainland. So far, Beijing has reacted to the protests from a distance, but Monday's violence could be a catalyst for Beijing to push for tighter control over Hong Kong, says BBC World Service Asia-Pacific editor Celia Hatton.

Time for Britain to clear the mess left by Margaret Thatcher who sold Hong Kong to China without consulting the Hongkongers and violated human rights by rejecting an independence referendum in 1980s. Hong Kong was part of Qing Empire not China. So wrong to “return” HK to China !

Boris Johnson looks like a PM but you sir are not.ancientChineseFaceReading if you don't understand this you got no chance in understanding China business lol.

BBCWorld The Chinese Communist gvt use repression, oppression, suppression like it's baby parties in Africa,ZANU PF for example

Come and make trouble in England.

'if this violent happens in UK or US they will get real bullets. No one has the freedom to break into other's house and smash all precious things leaving with I don't like you. They just don't understand how free a land they live in.'--Peter Brentley(a British cried for HK)

Ridiculous!

Real Jeremy Hunt: 'I will be more than happy to extradite Assange to the US. I will be more than happy to keep selling billions in weapons to Saudi Arabia. Yemen's genocide is a great business! Regarding HK, it is still the pearl of our imperial heart'

A primary school teacher was arrested today! The Hong Kong government is following the steps of China “legally” abuse the protesters. Please stop this..

BBCWorld The guy who doEs not know whether his wife and children are Chinese or Japanese? Shame on him. Don’t use the freedom and democracy of Hong Kong as bargaining chips. If you want to help Hong Kong people, give them all right of abode in UK.

Hunt said : that is my job, stop it now

BBCWorld Every time this man opens his mouth he creates a vacuum. This whole thing is what the British have always done. Conquer or acquire some poor country. Plunder it, then leave when its no longer any use. Abandon the population and turn a blind eye to rights abuses.

BBCWorld I am sure your wife and parents in law are not happy.

BBCWorld UK is not the lord of HK any more. It is ridiculous and disgraceful to make such comments to interfere China’s domestic issue.

BBCWorld JLM2017 Etonnant quand même, ils sont restés muets en ce qui concerne les événements survenus dans les villes de France. il faut dire que ne sommes pas une ancienne possession.

If it wasn’t so tragic it would be amusing listening to the Chinese cultural appropriation of the idea of ‘Rule of Law’. Speaking to people about that assumes the rules are made by agreement of the majority of the people, not imposed by an authoritarian dictatorship. HongKong

BBCWorld protesters need to stay non-violent. try not to break stuff.

BBCWorld The protesters in Hong Kong are dealing with a regime which believes in suppressing the rights of the people by force. Violence will lead to more violence. So the protesters should show restraint & carry on their protests peacefully.

BBCWorld The Chinese leadership doesn’t need a pretext🙄 they use repression whenever they feel threatened

by the way ..pls talk more about what old hongkong gov would do , or have done..
