For decades, Métis organizations have fought to achieve the same recognition of rights as First Nations

OTTAWA — The federal government will sign self-governing agreements with three provincial affiliates of the Métis Nation in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan on Thursday, the first time Ottawa has signed such agreements with Métis governments.

“Our ancestors, who shared Louis Riel’s vision for the Métis Nation to be self-governing and independent within our homeland, tirelessly built the MNA as their self-government over the generations,” said Métis Nation of Alberta President Audrey Poitras in a statement. “Now, after 90 years of perseverance and struggle, the work of our ancestors and the goal of our citizens has been realized: formal recognition of our Métis government here in Alberta.

The agreements also set out an expectation that the federal minister will recommend legislation to Parliament that would affirm the legal status of the Métis governments, though this almost certainly will not happen before the fall federal election.
