Protesters opposed to legislation they fear would reduce Hong Kong's judicial independence rallied outside the Justice Department Thursday, as the territory's Chief Executive Carrie Lam remained out of the public eye for the second week.

The latest protest came after thousands of people joined a rally overnight Wednesday, capping a daylong appeal to world leaders to discuss issues in Hong Kong at this week's G-20 summit bringing together the heads of China, the United States and others.

A few dozen protesters at the Justice Department are part of a series of actions targeting police headquarters and government offices to press a demand to have contentious extradition legislation cancelled. They called on Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah to completely withdraw the now-suspended bill and release all arrested protesters without charge.

Lam hasn't been seen in public since issuing a televised apology for mishandling the extradition legislation, prompting legislator Kwok Ka-ki of the opposition Civic Party to suggest she request a long-term leave of absence. Some lawmakers were planning a no-confidence vote against Lam, but that did not happen as scheduled on Wednesday. Pro-government supporters have a solid majority in the Legislative Assembly and the measure is not expected to pass.
