MIRI: Leaders of all Dayak native communities from Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan are planning a historic gathering in central Borneo to discuss a move to unite and fight for their social and land rights.

Society for Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak secretary-general Michael Jok said on Friday that it is crucial for all Dayaks scattered throughout Borneo to unite as one giant body."We Dayaks from all over Borneo have just formed a Borneo-level grouping called Dayak International Justice Council.

"This will be the common platform to unite all Dayaks living on Borneo Island in Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan. "This council will document all the written and oral laws of the Dayaks living on Borneo Island, so that we will have a common set of adat."On Thursday , the council will get all Dayak leaders from throighout Borneo to gather in Tumbang Anoi to discuss ground moves to push forward the agenda on unity throughout Borneo ," he told The Star on Friday.

Jok said Tumbang Anoi is the place where a historic treaty was signed by all the Dayak warring tribes in 1894. In 1894, all the Dayaks chiefs from throughout Borneo went to Tumbang Anoi and signed the peace treaty to end all civil wars that had split the Dayaks for centuries.
