Court upholds couple’s 20-year jail sentence

The Federal Court here upheld the 20-year jail term imposed on an elderly couple for causing the death of their Indo­ne­sian maid in 2011.

On April 4, the couple filed an application to review the Federal Court decision, claiming that they were wrongly sentenced to 20 years’ jail under Section 304 of the Penal Code. Sri Ram who was assisted by Hisyam Teh Poh Teik had submitted that the prosecution had relied on Section 300 of the Penal Code to prove its case for murder and that the High Court had relied on the same section when sentencing the couple to death.
