The personal responsibility of a helicopter pilot who died after falling down a crevasse in Antarctica"cannot be entirely ignored", defence lawyers have argued.David Wood died in 2016 when he fell into a crevasse while doing a routine fuel drop in Antarctica
The Federal Government and the company Mr Wood worked for, which was contracted by the government, are facing charges in the ACT Industrial Court in relation to the incident and two others before it. In the prosecution's opening, Maurice Neil QC said Mr Wood's lack of protective clothing contributed to his death.
The court heard Mr Wood was not wearing the PPE when he landed because it was"bulky" and"incompatible" with flying the helicopter and made it difficult to see properly when landing.
Sounds like some talented young electrical engineering PhD candidate needs to be assigned the task of developing a lightweight ice penetrating radar module for arctic teams to use under their helicopters so that they can scan for hidden voids under landing areas. 💡🤓
