WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dealt a partial victory to the owners of an Oregon bakery who were fined for refusing to provide a cake for a lesbian commitment ceremony.
Boyden Gray, a Washington, D.C., lawyer representing the Oregon bakers, said the Supreme Court should decide whether its 2015 gay marriage ruling"can be wielded as a shield in defense of same-sex unions but also — as in this case — a sword to attack others for adhering to traditional religious beliefs about marriage."
As Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cake did, the Kleins argued that their custom cakes are works of art deserving to be protected as free expression under the First Amendment. Requiring them to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, they said, would force them to express a view they oppose.
Cowards.
All Baker's have the right to refuse to bake for some vile same-sex marriages and any kind of celebratory occasions
Chances are this is a gay forced issue. They know this bakery has a position and they want to make a spectacle of it. Fact is, its business and they have to right to refuse whatever they want. Might be consequential to their business, but still their right.
Is that like what they call a Baker's Dozin'?
People...no one is asking you to participate in a ceremony...just bake the damned cake! If you're open to the public, the public has a right to buy a cake. How about if I wouldn't serve Born Again Christians because I oppose their bullshit? Boy, you would sure howl then, huh? 😂
as they should. the bakery is being bullied. Gays don't want 2 B forced 2 do something they don't want 2 do. gays force everyone around them 2 do what they don't want 2 do. Bakeries can refuse themed cakes but not a basic cake. the bakery hadn't refused a basic cake to them.
Just make them put a sign in the window that they don't make cakes for gay weddings. Than watch them go out of business.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. With the court becoming more conservative (and without knowing how long RBG will remain on it) time seems to be the most influential factor. Not to mention their is a similar case rising through the courts pertaining to a florist.
These cases are always weird to me. Like I get the discrimination is wrong but on the other hand, I don't want you making ANYTHING for me if you're a hateful bigot.
I can’t believe in this day and age, there are no gay owned bakeries.
