Minister for Health Simon Harris has confirmed that the State is to appeal a €2.1 million compensation award granted by the High Court to a terminally ill Limerick woman with cervical cancer

The States Claims Agency, acting on behalf of the HSE, will go to the Supreme Court tomorrow to appeal last month's judgement granted by Mr Justice Kevin Cross to Ruth Morrissey and her husband Paul.

He said the appeal "was not decided by politicians" but was a matter solely for States Claims Agency. Ms Morrissey was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014 and the High Court case related to cervical smears taken under the Cervical Check Screening programme in 2009 and 2012. Speaking outside the Court, Ms Morrissey said she did not think that she would be in this position "...because our Taoiseach told us none of us would have to go through this, but unfortunately I'm one that had to".

Extremely bad reporting. Is it not the fact an appeal must take place to try and overturn a judgement that there must be 'absolute certainity' when reading a smear, something that is impossible and will put any cancer screening programmes at risk?

Maybe he could appeal the €4.2 billion over spend on the children's hospital, €2.1 million is only a fraction of what these Muppets are wasting

Fcuking disgrace . Shame on the government ministers responsible. Time they got booted out

Absolute scum of the earth Harris varadkar the lot of em☹️

Well, it's not as if the woman fell off a swing or anything serious like that.

Not even mentioned on the at 1 O’Clock. Enough said.

Lovely..

Just when you thought this government & SimonHarrisTD couldn't sink any lower leave the women alone will ye

That's disgraceful. Simon Harris should hang his head in shame. This poor lady will not see her daughter grow up. The kindest thing our government could do is apologise to her and make sure she gets the compensation she deserves.

Absolutely disgusting, hopefully the appeal fails and the lady is awarded more, shame on the Department

This gets worse for Fg, appealing Hc €2m award, and at same time pumping €5m into an airport with no flights... this Government unlikely to last the year? It’s in disarray and all signs of incompetence.

SimonHarrisTD hubris has no end. In the name of God GO.

This is the pits. And he wonders why people protest outside his front door!

Adding insult to injury ! Get rid of this appalling government

Taken from the Noonan playbook typical FG.

What?

Might have been the case already, but just lost a voter SimonHarrisTD. Disgusting.

Refusing to take 13bn owed in taxes owed from Apple yet now appealing a 2.1m compo claim to a victim of a terrible national problem.

Absolutely vile from SimonHarrisTD and his dept to be putting the woman through this. Then again nothing surprises me when it comes to him

Is there no end to their shame

He wants the money for himself and his cronies !

She'll be dead before they give up a penny as it admits liabilities with too many similar cases.

Sweet Jesus
