WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is expected to appear at hearing in a London court via video link as he continues his fight against extradition to the United States.

The 47-year-old Assange is currently in Belmarsh Prison on the outskirts of London serving a 50-week sentence for jumping bail in Britain.

He was too ill to appear at a recent hearing but is expected Friday to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court via video link. U.S. officials have made clear their intention to prosecute Assange under the Espionage Act, blaming him for directing WikiLeaks' publication of a huge trove of secret documents that disclosed the names of people who provided confidential information to American and coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Legal Aid Ontario stops paying for outside lawyers at bail hearingsDue to Ford government cutbacks, Legal Aid Ontario said Wednesday will no longer pay outside lawyers to represent clients at bail hearings, a move the union representing duty counsel in Ontario says could lead to more people spending extended stints in jail before a bail hearing. Don’t do the crime than you won’t do the time. Good, do the crime, and pay for your defence yourself...most people don’t know that ‘young persons’, because god knows we can no longer call them ‘young ‘offenders’, receive automatic legal aid, regardless of family income. Good. If people want a FREE lawyer, why should the taxpayers provide an expensive one? They get what's there and handy.
