The announcement goes a step further, stating that this new group of volunteer commissioners will propose “reforms of human rights discourse where it has departed from our nation’s founding principles of natural law and natural rights.” Some see thisprimarily as a ploy to walk back State Department diplomacy in support of the rights of LGBTI people and women’s reproductive rights.

I had the privilege of directing that bureau from 2009 to 2013. On a daily basis, I saw the tireless efforts of State Department officials in Washington and in U.S. embassies around the world as they protected many of the most vulnerable people on our planet. Their efforts were especially challenging but important in countries like Russia, Venezuela, China, South Sudan and Syria, where national governments routinely violate the core rights of their own people.
