Union bosses defend right of workers to express religious beliefs | AnnaPattySMH

The national construction union would defend workers sacked for expressing their religious beliefs and one of its leaders believes Wallabies star Israel Folau has been unfairly "hung out to dry" for posting his religious views on social media.

"Because it is different and left of field of what most people think and believe, he paid the price of his livelihood with it," he said. Steve Purvinas, federal secretary for the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association , said he did not believe Folau should have been sacked for expressing his religious beliefs and questioned Rugby Australia sponsor Qantas's influence over his career.

The traditionally socially conservative Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association union and its former boss Joe de Bruyn declined to comment."I find what Folau said pretty repugnant, but there is an important principle here about employers regulating private conduct which I could easily see being used against union activists," he said.

AnnaPattySMH Which union? The same union that opposed Same Sex Marriage and equal treatment of LGBTIQ Australians in law?

AnnaPattySMH So don’t discriminate against religion, so religion can discriminate against others that don’t follow that religion.... ok, got it 👌

AnnaPattySMH He insulted and upset many people with his twisted views, he is homophobic and arrogant, if I walked into my office and said those things to co-workers I would be out on my ear, it is not acceptable behaviour.

AnnaPattySMH Do the unions also respect the right for extremist religious people including Isis members to express their religious beliefs also? I'm just curious or are all these people at the union just stupid or what?

AnnaPattySMH It is so dam wrong if you use religion to discriminate and then claim it is discriminating religion. What a bullshit

AnnaPattySMH Free speech is all that is needed, religion has divided enough on this planet don’t you think?

AnnaPattySMH Why didn't he read his contract, or not sign it? Breaching his contract and warned the 1st time was the time to question the contract, not deliberately breach it a 2nd time - the man's a fool.

AnnaPattySMH Perhaps we could hear their views on the rights of young gay people, particularly those struggling with their sexuality and at risk of suicide, to grow up free from having public figures explain why they're damned to hell through no fault of their own. Peter_Fitz

AnnaPattySMH Freedom of religion does not come with freedom from consequences. Folau vilified a section of the community; hiding behind the notion of religious freedom does not excuse it, or make it acceptable regardless of the religion. Auspol Folau IsraelFolau RugbyAU Wallabies

AnnaPattySMH Don't let the crazy Lefty's win.
