The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a statement denying an accusation by a U-N rapporteur on Torture that our government has failed to support Julian Assange, and is complicit in his psychological torture.
Nils Melzer recently visited Mr Assange in a British jail with a doctor and psychiatrist to assess his condition, and said he feared the Wikileaks founder could die in prison. Julian Assange is facing possible extradition to the United States, where he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Mr Melzer says he wouldn't get a fair trial in the U-S, and added the Australian Government was failing to protect a citizen.
And WTF have the UN done about it?
The guy committed a rape, he needs to stop trying to avoid that prosecution, then if he is actually extradited over his other actions the matter of Australia's obligations may become relevant, but currently it isn't. It isn't complicated, his situation now is of his own making.
The most useless international organisation to Australia. They just cost us money, they nothing for us other than criticise us without actually coming here.
One doesn`t often agree with anything emanating from the UN but this time they got it right!
LissaKJohnson All Australians should be shamed by this. We are governed or managed (on both sides of parliament) by spineless, morally depraved puppets of Washington.
The Australian government's lack of advocacy is a contributing factor to Assanges isolation and torture by more than one state. We need to BringJulianHome urgently.
