Sony, the maker of the popular PlayStation gaming console, is facing a court case over its alleged 'misleading' refund policy.

The competition watchdog has launched legal action against global tech giant Sony for allegedly breaching Australian Consumer Law by restricting refunds to consumers for faulty games.

The court filing listed eight examples where Sony "put practical impediments in the way of Australian users seeking to obtain refunds". According to the ACCC, Sony's policy breaches consumer law because it refuses refunds to PlayStation users unless the game developer told the consumer that the game was faulty.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said customers who purchased digital products like games had "exactly the same rights as they would at a physical store".
