Kenya's high court has found the petition to Repeal162 has no merit, ruling that laws targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people do not breach the country’s Constitution. CarlCollison reports.

In its judgment, the court stated that the petitioners failed to prove how the existence of these sections violated their right to health, dignity and privacy.

The report argued that many of the countries that outlaw same-sex relations do so “because they once were British colonies”. The list of African countries that inherited versions of this law is expansive: Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Swaziland, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Strong parallels between Alabama abortion vote and reproductive rights in SA and KenyaIt’s no coincidence that Alabama, the US state that has just voted to ban abortion almost totally, has a statue to the man labelled ‘the father of gynaecology’ and who learnt his trade experimenting on female slaves. This was one of the lessons learnt by a group of South African girls, who found out on road trips in the US and Kenya that reproductive rights are under attack in both countries, write India Baird and Kelly Petersen.
