A 102-year-old woman is being evicted from her longtime L.A. residence so the landlord’s daughter can move in instead, according to an eviction notice the woman received.

Thelma Smith, a 102-year-old Ladera Heights resident seen in the photo at right, is being evicted from her residence of 30 years. Her longtime neighbor Pauline Cooper, left, is worried about her friend's situation.

Under Los Angeles’ Rent Stabilization Ordinance, a landlord can legally evict a tenant to accommodate a relative’s housing needs. But the law indicates that if the units are of comparable housing, the last person who moved in would be the first person forced to leave. That regulation is meant to protect low-paying tenants from being targeted.for unincorporated areas went into effect in December, the law is weaker.

“She’s been there a thousand years and is paying very low rent,” said Cooper, who has lived in the quiet neighborhood between Culver City and Baldwin Hills since 1999.

Sad and horrible

Don’t know the relative’s circumstances, but think that displacing a 102 year old woman who has lived there for years is disgraceful. Not only disgraceful, but sinful and inhumain.

that is the saddest thing I have ever heard.... and I'm sure its very illegal too.... shame on that landlord!

Been there. But this is more disgraceful!

Watchdogsniffer WTH?! ericgarcetti - please help this woman! This is hideously unconscionable.

Follow the law

Nepotism at its worst.

Dé já vú - how it ended last time 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Trump did this

People are right. Why isn’t everything free in this world ?Why is everyone trying to make money& earn a living. That’s not fair that people got rich from working hard & saved money to buy homes. The guy that works his Ass off to buy rental properties should rent them out for free

I’m sure after the current tenant moves out they’ll want to update the residence. So the rent the daughter will be paying I’m sure will be higher than current rent and cover the improvements. .

but our local government has banned plastic bags!

Sounds fair. The elite have to live somewhere!

It’s a reasonable move. The landlord is looking out for their daughter. I do feel for the lady and wish her luck in finding a place. The real issue is how high rent in L.A is high all around.

Too bad. But we shouldn't sacrifice the young on the altar of the old.

Welcome Home.

This is awful, just awful SMH

Burn it down as you leave

pure evil

It’s the “Trump effect”. I believe that his cruelty is unbridled, therefore when others see that he has no ramifications for it, they too perform without conscience. If we had a decent, respectful president, who displayed good leadership qualities, the citizens would follow.

She isn’t be evicted she is given notice to move.

At 102 she should be in a senior home

Private ownership. What is the problem? No one owes anyone a place to live. How about just helping the old gal. Instead of being ignorant about the owner.

Whoever is doing this to Ms. Smith is a scummy lowlife. Their daughter can rent an apartment somewhere else. Let Ms. Smith live the rest of her life in peace not chaos.

And as unfortunate as this is for the resident, after seeing the interview w/the landlord, I totally agree with his decision. Hopefully ,a landlord w/an available unit will see this story and contact the parties involved... they all seem to be good ppl in a tough situation!

Disgusting.

mygoodness is being....be! They're everywhere. esl elt tesol tefl english inglés
