Second, the evangelical right has for decades been very loud, very well organized and very convincing in their argument that the GOP could not survive without them. The price for their loyalty was an absolutist stand on abortion. Trump’s ability to mesmerize the evangelical right and their utter subservience to him have made evident to anyone paying the least bit of attention to politics that principle matters a whole lot less than power to these people.

Public opinion, therefore, has tremendous ramifications for both parties, for 2020 and for the direction of the GOP.

One, it is not getting to the Supreme Court anytime soon. Two, the Chief Justice has shown little indication he wants his name on overturning anything controversial. WaPo is wasting its time until RBG steps down.
