The House of Representatives has passed a bipartisan resolution denouncing the practice of female genital mutilation and recognizing it as a human rights violation against women and girls.
In their resolution, which passed unanimously with a 393 to 0 vote, which was co-sponsored by 28 congress members, lawmakers call on the U.S. government, as well as the international community to undertake coordinated efforts"to eliminate the harmful practice." The practice, which involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, is most common in parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It is tied to a number of traditions but is not connected with any one culture or religion, with the practice occurring around the world and across religious groups and cultures.
Health risks associated with FGM include severe pain, painful menstruation and intercourse, tissue swelling, excessive bleeding, urinary and vaginal infections, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the World Health Organization .
maureenqw You KNOW that senatemajldr will kill this bill. He and SenateGOP are 100% in favor of female genital mutilation. Wait and see.
Why don't the states criminalize the conduct? Can't they pass legislation? Can't the prosecutors get a conviction? What religions practice this barbarism? Are we reaping what we've sown?
Really? “The resolution to denounce female genital mutilation ... comes months after a district court ruling in November declared U.S. laws against FGM unconstitutional, with charges dropped against two doctors accused of carrying out the procedure” we need Trump 2 fix it ban
