EDMONTON — The first orders of business for Alberta’s new United Conservative government are to repeal the carbon tax, reduce business red tape and slash the corporate tax rate, the opening salvos in Premier Jason Kenney’s plan to restore the Alberta advantage by undoing years of New Democratic reform in the province.
At the Alberta legislature, Nixon walked reporters through bits and pieces of that agenda, though it was a press conference light on detail and specifics; repeatedly he promised details would be coming in the days and weeks ahead. Nixon promised further information in coming days on the party’s climate change plan, focusing on technology and large emitters to “actually tackle the problem.” The Alberta government, he insisted, was “not in crisis mode” regarding climate change. He said, too, that the government was still taking a wait-and-see approach to fighting the federal carbon tax in court after Saskatchewan lost its challenge earlier this month. “We are going to fight back,” said Nixon.
Nixon also said legislation would cut red tape around business and job creation, focusing on the “financial side of things,” but he suggested they’d keep labour law changes on harassment and bullying.A tax cut, Nixon promised, will bring the corporate tax rate down incrementally from 12 per cent to eight per cent by 2022, without needing to bring each cut back before the legislature. “That will attract investment,” said Nixon.
I can’t say enough how much I hate him
