The Ondo State Government has said it is yet legalise the cultivation of cannabis, popularly called Indian hemp, in the state but has begun procedures to actualise the legalisation.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who was in Thailand last week in company with the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Muhammad Abdallah, for a programme tagged, ‘Medicinal Cannabis Extract Development’, had said the state government was planning to take advantage of the commercial and medicinal value of the plant to create jobs for the youth.

However, Akeredolu, following his statement came under attack and has now warned that cannabis cultivation had yet to be legalised. Speaking through the Commissioner for Information, Mr Yemi Olowolabi, the governor said the state government was in the process of making it legal. He said, “We are still at the elementary stage of this matter. Before we legalise cannabis growing in this state, it has to pass through certain procedures and we have begun the procedures.

RotimiAkeredolu ndlea_nigeria Well the love of money is the root of all evil, if not how can a whole governor be pursuing something injurious to the health of his people? I think the wellbeing of the people should be paramount rather than the profits from marijuana.

RotimiAkeredolu ndlea_nigeria this is a good initiative and will earn massive revenue for the state once they start exporting it to Canada,Uruguay where it is legalized and also some selected states in the U.S.where it is also legalized for recreational consumption,MBuhari should embrace this positive move!

RotimiAkeredolu ndlea_nigeria Making cannabis cultivation legal doesn’t bother me, my concern is who controls the means of production & distribution of this cannabis & to what extent can one be accused of its usage. Seems like certain people in govt are putting economic interest ahead of public mental health.

In September, the NDLEA destroyed cannabis farms in Ute and Ose local government areas in Ondo State and arrested 30 suspects, seizing 31 kilograms of dried weed suspected to be marijuana in the Suleja area.
