Alabama was never going to give in on the matter of abortion, just because the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling 45 years ago with which it disagreed

Alabama has never been a place to abandon its beliefs easily. It took a hundred years — a full century — after the end of the Civil War for Alabamans to even begin to treat black people as human beings, and only then after the extremity of its bigotry finally forced a reluctant federal establishment to act.

The law does not hold women criminally liable if they receive an abortion, but threatens doctors with up to 99 years in prison if they provide one. It is the most stringent anti-abortion law in the U.S., allowing procedures only if there is a serious health risk to the mother or if the “unborn child has a lethal anomaly.”

Though denounced as hateful, extreme, dangerous and anti-woman, the bill does something that has frightened off Canadians since the 1980s: it opens the door to an actual discussion about the specifics of a procedure that continues to trouble tens of millions of people. Alabamans are already feeling the brunt of the anger they’ve stirred. Feminists, Democrat politicians, celebrities, presidential wannabes, civil liberties organizations and a host of support groups launched fierce attacks. Many of the 20-plus people seeking the Democratic nomination fired off Twitter blasts. An Alabama senator asserted that Gov. Kay Ivey, who signed the bill, “just raped Alabama.”

It’s seems certain abortion will be an issue during the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election. It’s only the latest state to introduce draconian restrictions: Georgia introduced a ban after six weeks of pregnancy; Mississippi’s governor signed a bill preventing procedures once a heartbeat becomes detectable, as early as six weeks after conception.

Anti-choicers aren't politely raising 'awkward questions'. They want to Alabama your rights and take away your bodily autonomy

Abortion is not a form of birth control women are abusing it.

Butt out! Abortion is not an issue in Canada - stop trying to make it one..detracts from REAL issues like immigration, pipe lines, money laundering!

The lack of nuanced discussion on this topic is disturbing. The lack of laws in Canada means that nothing is settled and guidelines on what is acceptable are needed.

First put state money where your mouth is. If you insist on live births, set aside $1M for each. A partial list: orphanages, adoptive parents, foster parents, Children's Aid, welfare, single mothers, baby food, diapers, child care, education JK-12 health care etc..
