James Ng, 37, admitted to two animal cruelty charges in Edmonton Court of Queen’s Bench Wednesday

A man who admitted to drowning two of his girlfriend’s pet cats over a span of two years said he was angry with the animals because one of them smelled bad and another one hissed at him.According to facts read into the record by Crown prosecutor Christian Lim and admitted by the accused, Ng was living with his then girlfriend in Claire Estates, a downtown Edmonton apartment. They lived with two rescue cats named DaVinci and Picasso, and earlier had a third cat named Ms. P.

On either July 5 or 6, 2017, DaVinci and Picasso were noisily playing in the apartment. Court heard Ng was having trouble sleeping. His girlfriend had left for her job at a medical lab just before 7 a.m. The girlfriend asked where Picasso was, fearing he had died of a feline illness that killed a previous cat.Ng told her Picasso had hissed at him when he went to pet him shortly after waking up. While he didn’t remember the details, he said he got angry and struck Picasso over the head multiple times, causing the cat to urinate and lose control over his bowels.

Ng said he then tried to do the same to DaVinci, but she put up a fight, leaving scratch marks all over his arms. Lim said Davinci “put up a good and long fight.”Picasso’s cold, “rock hard” body was stored on a garbage bin in their storage room. Ng told his girlfriend that he had earlier placed the body in a plastic bag in the refrigerator but removed it so it could warm up.
