U.S., European diplomats support Canada in Chinese court in death-penalty appeal

The show of solidarity did not diminish Canadian worries over the fate of Robert Schellenberg of British Columbia.

Schellenberg's new sentence was meted out six weeks after the RCMP detained Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver on a U.S. extradition warrant, plunging Sino-Canadian diplomatic relations to a new low. Nine days after Meng's arrest, two other Canadians -- ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor -- were detained in China on allegations they had violated China's national security.

A Chinese foreign-ministry spokesman called again for Canada on Thursday to immediately released Meng so that she can return to China "safe and sound." Meng appeared in a Vancouver court on Wednesday, where her lawyers said her defence would be based on the argument she shouldn't be extradited to the U.S. because she hasn't violated sanctions under Canadian laws and her arrest at Vancouver's airport was unlawful.

Freeland also said she remains relentless in pushing the government's attempts to build an international coalition of support to win the freedom of Kovrig and Spavor -- an effort that extended to Schellenberg's on Thursday with foreign diplomats attending his court appearance.

the death penlty is a little much but why should we canadians be exempt from following the rules of other countries? if you want to break the law in other countries prehaps read up on their laws first.

this guy is a known trafficker, wasted all the opportunities Canada has to offer..he's gotta go

if it was Saudi Arabia ... there would be no time to object - the head would be already severed

Court to hear Douglas Garland's appeal in deaths of Calgary couple, grandsonThe Alberta Court of Appeal is to hear arguments today from lawyers for a man sentenced to life in prison for killing a couple and their grandson. Unbelievable Agreed. He feels the 75 year sentence excessive and cruel. I’m not even sure a death sentence is that in this case. As the mom of that poor boy I would be waiting for him.
